The stamp ‘M∗M’ (Machine Made) was used by James Berry, who, incidentally, was born in Wavertree, the suburb of Liverpool where this author was born. The movement shown here is a 44 mm diameter, 14 size, rough movement. Often called an ébauche, it is the type supplied to the finishing trades. (See the notes on finishing on the Prescot Watches page). The centre wheel and fusee arbours have been left ready for sizing. The partially jewelled movement came wrapped in brown paper, in what is thought to be its original wooden veneer box.
